Why we exist
Good intentions deserve good information.
The short version lives on the home page; this is the full case.
01
The gap.
People give generously: money, time, and skill. But finding the good work that fits what you care about is hard, and knowing what that work achieves is harder still. Not because organizations will not measure, but because very few have ever been given the talent, systems, knowledge, or investment that serious measurement requires. Measurement is specialized, expensive work, and the sector has never been resourced for it.
That opacity has a cost, and the whole sector pays it. Trust erodes: people give less confidently, or stop. Strong programs go underfunded because they cannot show what they know is true. And the organizations themselves are often missing the one thing that would let them improve: a clear picture of what their own work achieves.
02
The thesis.
Our thesis borrows from a place that solved this long ago. Business runs on data rigour and financial rigour: audited numbers, operational measures, returns. We apply that same discipline to the for-impact sector, refined for social good rather than financial gain. Three things come into view for any organization: the transparency of its finances, the strength of its operations, and the impact of its approach. Efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency, measured properly.
Rigour alone is not enough; it has to be usable. So our research is rigorous, defensible, and honest about being a best attempt, and it is shared in ways that meet people where they are: a clear read at a glance for someone who wants a quick check, and the full depth of models, sources, and assumptions for anyone who wants to drill down.
03
The two things.
And we hold this work with humility. Better evidence alone will not reverse the decline in giving. Two things together can.
04
Rising together.
Impact and experience both have to be accessible to everyone, or neither works. Harness Good does the research, the assessment, the selection, and the monitoring. Good Rises, our technology partner, does everything else: the product, the experience, and the tools that make all of it accessible to organizations of every size.
No organization is perfect. The point is not perfection. The point is knowing what your money is doing, and getting better. Measurement rebuilds trust, because trust follows proof. For the person giving, that proof pays a dividend: you see what your gift became, so you can give again with confidence instead of hope. It helps organizations understand their own work, reallocate investment, and change how they operate. And when it is accessible to every organization, not only the largest, the whole sector rises, and every dollar is harnessed toward the most good it can do.
Proof pays both ways: you see what your gift became, and organizations see what their work achieves.
05
Our part.
Our purpose
To harness the money already here into human flourishing.
Harness Good exists to act on that thesis: research that shows what works, assessments that connect people with for-impact organizations of every kind and with people in need, tools that let those organizations do more with what they have, and funds granted where they do the most good.
06
Same discipline, harder ledger.
We will never tell you what to care about. That is yours. Name a cause and the evidence picks organizations within it, never the cause. Name no cause, and it looks across all of them for the most good your dollar can do. That is what the Good Rises Fund is built to find.
This is harder than it sounds. Disclosure standards are inconsistent, so there is no standard earnings measure for ending hunger, no margin for restoring a wetland. Assessing a for-impact organization is closer to analyzing a private company: the information is partial, and judgement fills the gaps that standards should have closed. A few disclose like public companies. Most cannot yet.
Money accepted in public trust owes the highest standard of disclosure, and meeting it should be within reach of every organization, not a privilege of the largest. So we do both sides: the best assessment the evidence allows, and the tools that help every size share more.
